Eagle Project Workbook Posted 2 November 2011 | Attention Scouts, Leaders, and Parents or Guardians Eagle Scout rank requirement 5 has been reworded. To support that change, a new Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook has been created. Through Dec. 31, 2011, Scouts have a choice to use either the new workbook or the one it is replacing. Scouts whose Eagle Scout service project has already been approved by the council or district under the former wording of requirement 5—and using the former workbook—should continue with the same workbook. If their project has not yet been approved by the council or district, they may elect to use the revised requirement 5 and the new workbook. Starting Jan. 1, 2012, Eagle Scout candidates—unless they have already submitted a plan for approval by the council or district under the former requirement—will be expected to fulfill the revised service project requirement 5 using the new workbook. Be A Scout Posted 11 August 2011 | Unit leadership should update their Be A Scout information; this will update information on your unit connected to a Google map PIN feature allowing people to search on zip codes, cities, etc and find your unit location, contact and meeting information. The top unit leader (Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, Coach, Advisor), Committee Chairman, and Chartered Organization Representative (as listed on the current unit charter) are the only persons that have access to the Be A Scout database to make updates. This is accessible through your personal MyScouting account; once logged in, you will have a link for Be A Scout in the Unit Tools navigation areas. If you DO NOT have the Be A Scout link, you are not being recognized as being in one of the three positions for the unit authorized to update the database - contact the Council Registrar, Tiffany Adams, 800-662-7102. There are several information papers discussing Be A Scout available from a link on anyone's MyScouting main page as well. The BSA Be A Scout information paper is available at THIS LINK. |

Shooting Sports Opportunity Posted 28 February 2011 | Scouters – the Crosse Creek Rifle and Pistol Club has monthly shooting matches OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Visit their web site at: http://www.crossecreekrifleandpistolclub.com/Matches/matches_homepage.htm For more information. Often times, firearms are available for you to use if you do not have them. Contact information is provided as well. DO NOT hesitate to call the contact with any questions. Also, I have talked with the Club President about building up the youth program at the range; we discussed having a Scouting program, so your Scouts can consider starting a match team in the various disciplines. I am presently working with Buck Buchannon (Black Powder contact on those match pages) to begin a muzzle loading program through Crew 32; some of our Venturers are also interested in the other matches. If you have Venture age Scouts interested in hunting or shooting specific programs, please ask them to contact me. We can discuss joining Crew 32 or starting another Crew if there is enough interest and adult support. I have several organizations that are very eager to sponsor Scout units interested in shooting, hunting, wildlife, and conservation programs. Jim Sheckels, jim@sheckels.com or 910.322.7683. National Youth Leadership Society Posted 20 February 2011 | The Value of Leadership The heart and soul of what we do in the Boy Scouts of America is produce leaders for tomorrow. One of our strengths is shaping leaders who have a strong foundation of values and who know how to serve others, and we have had 100 years of practice. Now, as we begin to celebrate that rich century of leadership development, we introduce the National Youth Leadership Society. Its purpose is to recognize youth members of the BSA who have learned and practiced outstanding leadership skills—the elite of our program. We want these youths, who have worked so hard at learning and leading, to enjoy a form of recognition that other organizations, such as schools, colleges, employers, and the military, can understand and value. Youths inducted into this National Youth Leadership Society may now receive the recognition they deserve in a more tangible way. As a national honor society, the National Youth Leadership Society calls upon local councils to nominate those individuals who meet certain criteria. Upon acceptance, the National Court of Honor will offer the individual the honor of membership into the Society. The council will be sent the appropriate honors and will perform a formal induction. (See the nomination process steps HERE) The National Court of Honor will maintain a national honor roll of inducted Society members as a class each calendar year. Individuals will be able to say they are a member of a particular class, for instance, the class of 2010 for members inducted in 2010. The class is based on when the individual was approved, not when the induction took place. |
Unit Leader Award of Merit Posted 20 February 2011 | Quality unit leadership is the key to a quality unit program—and it leads to better Scout retention. Statistics show that if young people stay engaged in the program for at least five years, the BSA’s influence likely will stay with them for the rest of their lives. A quality Scouting experience will help keep Scouts in the program, and the Boy Scouts of America created the Unit Leader Award of Merit to recognize the quality unit leaders who make that happen. The Unit Leader Award of Merit replaces the Scoutmaster, Varsity Team Coach, and Venturing Crew Advisor award of merit programs. This new recognition has revised requirements, and Cubmasters are also eligible for this recognition. Submit nominations for this award on the AWARD OF MERIT FORM and information. |

Occoneechee Scout Reservation - New Facility Reservation Forms Posted 4 January 2009 | The Occoneechee Council has, over the last several years, spent over $3 million in improvements at Camp Durant to make it a truly first-class facility for our Scouts. In particular, the addition of a new Aquatic Center, a Handicraft Shelter with pottery kilns, flush toilets and showers in each campsite, and the construction of a Grand Lodge with a modern kitchen and the ability to seat over 700 Scouts at one time are making this camp a state of the art facility. Our Scouts deserve no less. Additional improvements are planned for Camp Durant, Camp Reeves and Camp Campbell. However, these improvements come with increased maintenance costs. In recognition of these costs, we recommend that fees consistent with the need to maintain the camp in a first-class state accompany the use of these improved facilities.
The accompanying fee schedule will become active as of September 1, 2008. |
Hazardous Weather Training Posted 21 December 2008 | This training is a requirement for certain activities and must be annotated on the Tour Permit as of 1 January 2009.
